Every college baseball program, regardless of how good they might be, hits a skid at some point in their season, and it’s safe to say that Georgia Tech has hit their first skid of 2026. They sustained their biggest loss of the season at the hands of #5 Auburn by a score of 9-2, the largest deficit of defeat for the Jackets thus far. With the loss to Auburn, it’s the first time in 2026 that Georgia Tech has lost consecutive games as they dropped the final game of their weekend series with Clemson.
Simply put, the Jackets were out-classed on both sides of the ball on Tuesday evening. The red-shirt freshman Dimitri Angelakos took the mound for the Jackets in his third consecutive mid-week start. He hadn’t faced much adversity on the mound as a starter to this point as he threw a total of 8.1 scoreless innings between two starts against Georgia State and West Georgia. Unfortunately for the Jackets, Auburn got the best of Angelakos. The freshman right-hander lasted just an inning and a third, giving up four earned runs on five hits, a walk, and one strikeout in 39 pitches.
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Auburn managed to tie the game in the bottom half on back-to-back doubles via Chase Fralick and Bub Terrell. It was in the bottom of the second that the Tigers broke out for their big inning against Angelakos. The designated hitting Logan Gregorio led of the inning with a solo home run, the first given up by Angelakos in 2026. With one runner on later in the frame, Chris Rembert hit a two-run shot to put the Tigers up by three runs. It was then that James Ramsey pulled Angelakos to bring in sophomore right-hander Jake Lankie who came into the game with 7.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen across four appearances. After surrendering Chase Fralick’s second double in as many innings, Lankie managed to punch out the next two hitters to stop the bleeding.
Lankie settled in over the next two innings, retiring eight straight through the fourth inning before Auburn got the offense going once again in the fifth. A walk and two singles loaded the bases before Lankie was removed for senior left-hander Brett Barfield who recorded a strikeout before walking in a run and was then removed for junior right-hander Caden Gaudette. Another walk brought in the Tigers sixth run before they extended the lead to 9-1 with an infield single, a fielder’s choice, and another single.
Those nine runs would be it for Auburn and was more than enough as the pitching staff shut down the Jackets, allowing just two runs – the lowest total scored by the Jackets in a single game this year. The sophomore right-hander Andreas Alavarez got the start for the Tigers, his fifth of the season, all of which have come in mid-weeks thus far. It’s safe to say Alvarez rose to the occasion as he posted arguably the best start of his career against arguably the best lineup he has ever faced. He recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts across just five innings against an offense that came into Tuesday’s game having drawn more walks than strikeouts as an entire team. His fastball-curveball combo was nearly un-hitable with the fastball running up to the mid-90s while his high-70s curveball was falling off the table with an immense amount of downer break. On 94 pitches, Alvarez gave up just one un-earned run on two hits and three walks across his five innings of work. Sophomore Christian Chatterton and freshman LJ Cormier combined for four innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on one hit, three walks, and six strikeouts.
It was certainly a day to forget for the Jackets offense as they struck out a total of 16 times while recording just three hits total. Jarren Advincula managed to log two hits and drove in both runs on the day while Alex Hernandez had the only other hit. They did manage to draw six walks, with Drew Burress and Kent Schmidt both drawing two walks while Ryan Zuckerman and Carson Kerce both drew a walk of their own. Unfortunately for Vahn Lackey, his 30-game on-base streak dating back to last year came to an end as he went 0-3 with two strikeouts.
Auburn extended their winning streak over Georgia Tech dating back to 2024 to five games, and will meet the Jackets again at Mac Nease Park in Atlanta in just two weeks on March 31st for another mid-week match-up. In the meantime, Georgia Tech heads north to take on Pitt over the weekend for their third conference series while Auburn stays home to take on #2 Texas over the weekend.
